The Retreat for the Sick, forerunner of Norfolk General Hospital, stood on Holt Street. This imposing building, in the Spanish style of architecture, was built by a Mr. Donaghey from Ireland. Later it became a fashionable Female Academy, whose principals were Aristides and Leonidas Smith. Before it was a hospital it was owned by Father O'Keefe of St. Mary's Church. Finally, after being partially destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt as a Catholic School.
